Could the ‘grey belt’ be the answer to meet future housing demand in Kent and Medway or are we already ahead of the curve with the likes of Otterpool Park, where half the total area will be retained as open space. Interesting piece here in The Times about how ‘ugly’ parts of the green belt like car parks and former industrial areas could free up space for between 100,000 and 500,000 homes nationwide. What if your Smart City isn’t, well… a city? I’ve been thinking recently about what it would take to have a smart city in my area; that area being the rolling hills of Calderdale. Yes, we have Halifax and Brighouse as large urban areas, but the majority of our settlements are along the river valleys. Would Hebden Bridge and Todmorden (5 miles apart) be separate “cities”, or does the full length of the valley (15 miles down to Elland) become one long connected space? The whole valley is linked by the risk of flooding, so already shares a common interest. And transport along that length, both public and private, has it’s… issues… So if your city isn’t a city, do you still get all the benefits of a smart city?
